I neglected to mention that June 4th 1989 was the Tienanmen Square Massacre.
Therefore, yesterday was the 20th year anniversary of the tragic event. I was watching the news last night, and it was really sad -- mainly because I love China but understand that such things happen in my homeland.
In 1989, there was political unrest that resulted in political activity. Many young people sought reform and attempted to bring to the political table the topic of a new form of government -- one in which there was more liberty and equality. However, much passed without any change; soon, measures on both sides became more extreme with the protesters loudly vocalizing their thoughts and the Chinese political body refusing to budge.
The butting of heads eventually led to the Massacre of June 4th, where people who protested in Tienanmen Square were killed. (You should really look this up if you don't know about it.)
But it's a weird thought. As someone who was brought up with history from the Western viewpoint, I know about what happened at Tienanmen Square. However, many people in (Mainland) China are uneducated when it comes to this; this is because of the heavy censorship which results in exile, imprisonment, and silencing. Therefore very few Mainland people know of what really transpired, and those who do cannot speak of it under the letter of the law.
So it's really quite heartbreaking to hear of such sadness that's being under rug swept. (In fact, my friend who went to the Mainland last year said that she visited Tienanmen Square. She knew the importance of visiting such a sight filled with tragedy, but the Chinese people who went had visited because of its historical value.)
But for updating!
Yesterday (afternoon), we got a call saying that my brother has swine flu. WTG.
Omigosh, why? And who gave it to him!?!
Anyways, they called us all in for examination, and we spent a few hours getting checked up. They sent us back after taking medicine and told us that we'd hear back from them the following day (today). Meanwhile, we're supposed to wear masks (which we have been doing anyways) and keep ourselves in quarantine for a week (which we have been doing anyways).
So I'm just waiting to hear back from them today.
EEEEEEEEK. Let's hope for the best, 'kay?
Love, etc.
